Owing to the frequent complaints of South Wairarapa farmers as to the ravages ma<le in their pastures by the increasingly large herds of deer, the Wellington Acclimatisation Society has decided U throw open to the deerstalker the northern portion of the Haurangi forest reserve, an area, roughly, about five by six miles in extent, in the Feathers ton County, to the southeast of the Wairarapn Lake. For the guidance of .stalkers a. 6ft "blaze" has been made along the boundaries of the reserve, and also between that part of the reserve that may be shot over and the part still strictly reserved. A plan of the district, showing the part of forest reserve opened to deerstalkers, has been printed. It. has been a well-grounded complaint on the part of stalkers from abroad, after being induced to come to New Zealand for the sport of deerstalking, that in the Wellington district, at least, they have been utterly dependent on gaining the permission of owner- of private property. This restriction is removed by the ojxwiug of the reserve. A special meeting of the members of the Chamber of Commerce will bo held this afternoon at three o'clock, when Mr. J. S. Larke, the Canadian Trade Commissioner, wiJ'. give an address.
