SOUTHERN SUPREME COURTS.

NEW PLYMOUTH. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] New Plymouth, Wednesday. The Supreme Court criminal sessions were opened to-day, before Mr. Justice Edwards. Albert Hugo Korth pleaded not guilty to a charge of false pretences by means of a valueless cheque, at Stratford. He was found guilty, and sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment, and ordered to be sent to the habitual offenders' prison at New Plymouth, having a long record of previous convictions. Sandy Birch, alias Brown, alias Johnson, pleaded not guilty to the theft of-a saddle, bridle, and breastplate. He was an old offender, and was sentenced to two years' hard labour. A. J. Stewart pleaded not guilty to a charge of common assault on Detective Boddam, and assaulting with intent to commit actual bodily harm. He was found guilty and sentenced to three months' hard labour. Leonard Copestake, a lad of 16, came up for sentence for forging and uttering a cheque at Inglewood. On account of his youth, he was admitted to probation for two years, and ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution in instalments. ~ PALMERSTON NORTH. [BY TELEGRAPH. association-.] Palmerston North, Wednesday. At the Supreme Court to-day J F Svmons and Albert J. I). Brown, for having assaulted and robbed Robert Patterson, of Shannon, of one bottle of whiskv and 7s'od were sentenced to two years and a-half imprisonment with hard labour. John Chalkei was acquit on a charge of robbery with violence. Emanuel White, on a charge of having caused the death of Lucy Goldfinch, bv failing to tako proper precautions for her safety, was found not guilty bv the jury and discharged accordingly. * William Waugh, charged with intent to do bodily harm to Constable Connor, was found guilty, and was fined £100, beino- ordered to pay the cost of the prosecution, or m default two years' imprisonment.. He was also bound over to keep the peace for two years, himself in £200, and two sureties of £100 each. The prisoner was ordered to Ik; detained till the tine was paid and sureties found. Charles Fitton, charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and with having caused bodily harm to William Koach, was fined £100, and was ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution, or in default two years' imprisonment with hard labour Accused was also bound over to keep the peace for three years, himself in £000 and two sureties of £250 each. The order for imprisonment was suspended for i week to allow Fitton time to pay the line and find sureties-.
