THE TRAMWAY SERVICE.

RECENT IRREGULARITIES. A LETTER was received by the One-tree Hill Road Board last evening from the general manager of the Auckland Electric Tramways Co., Limited (Mr. J. J. Walklate) explaining the causes of the recent irregularities in the tramways service. The company were doing their utmost to rectify matters, aim no trouble or expense would be spared in doing so. "At last the company: have acknowledged the irregularities of their time-table," paid the chairman (Mr. E. W. Burton).! The position, •he 'said,' was getting* worse and worse. The trams had been running now for nearly six years and no provision has evidently been made for worn-out machinery. On his last visit to Sydney ho had taken particular notice of the car service, and everything appeared to work smoothly there. In that city there, were 986 cars for a population of 600,000, and he was surprised when the local city engineer drew up a comparison of the number of cars iu many of the big cities in the world, in relation to their various populations, that no reference had been made to Sydney's service. Messrs. Devereux and Creagh thought that the cause, of the trouble was that the company had not anticipated that the traffic would increase to the extent it had. The Chairman said thai he had written to .Mr. J. Howe, Mayor of Onehunga, asking him, as chairman of the Suburban Local Bodies" Conference, to call a meeting shortly to discuss the question. After further discussion, the following resolutions were carried: —(1) "That the Board acknowledge the receipt of the letter from the general manager of the Tramways Company, wherein tin; company at last acknowledges, and regrets (a) its irregularities in running the time-table, (b) that these, irregularities are becoming more acute at times when the cars are most needed, (c) the discovery that machinery wears out." 2. "That the Board inform the company that it. proposes to take such steps as it deems meet to enforce the company's adherence to the terms of the deed j of delegation."
