The origin of the tire is a mystery. It broke out near the study in a place where, so far as is known, no tire had been. The inmates •were aroused, and succeeded in getting out of the burning building safely. The Newmarket Fire Brigade was alarmed, and shortly afterwards arrived on the scene. Sergeant, Griffiths and Constable Lipscombe, of the Newmarket police station, were also promptly in attendance, and a little later the Parneil and City Fire Brigades sent de* tachnients. Owing, however, to the energetic measures taken by the Newmarket Brigade who.worked well and did a lot of salvage, the flames were checked by the " time reinforcements arrived. The fire was thiis opniined to the front portion of the bouse Jp ;ng Carlton ' Gore Road. The • c i'yed were the study, dining- • room/ draw.jgroom, and another room, conr a quantity ot goods belonging to Jlr.wid Mrs. Myers, and stored away prior to their departure for England several • months ago. The ceiling of the billiardroom was also destroyed, as was the main ' passage. These constituted about half of J the entire house. None of the contents of this portion of the premises were saved, though all in the rear portion were. The total damage is estimated roughly at £2000, ! and most of Mr. Myers' private effects that were in the house are gone. Fortunately it was a still morning, a fact which helped to ■, prevent the flames from spreading further. The conflagration, lit up the surrounding district, and a fair number of people were attracted to the scene. The house was insured with the South Britsh for £2000, and the furniture in the same office for an amount that was not ascertainable last night. ■ The unfortunate occurrence is just on the eve of .the return of Mr. and Mrs. Myers, who are expected back on . Sunday next, A seven-roomed house in Ariiey, Road, Remuera, owned by Mr. Coles, of Oneliunga, and occupied by Mr. Malcolm Fleming, was totally destroyed by fire at about ■" 10 o'clock on" Saturday morning. The City Fire Brigade received a call "from John Burns and Co. warehouse, Cus-tom-street, at 9.15 on Saturday morning.
