HARBOUR POLLUTION.

The spirit in which the Auckland Harbour Board Js evidently determined to approach the evil of harbour pollution is already assured of the approval and support of every good citizen of New Zealand. Nominally a local matter, it is in reality one of national importance, for it is diametrically opposed to the customs and practices of civilised States that the sewage of populous centres should be allowed to pollute and infect waters of public importance and national use. When our City Council was reprehensibly indolent in dealing with the drainage problems of the metropolis, wo did not hesitate to. support the Harbour Board in its attempt to put a very necessary pressure upon the city authority. Whether local bodies on the line of the projected Main Drain join in the metropolitan scheme or not is for their members—and the public at election day—to decide. But the Harbour Board is evidently determined "that with a feasible alternative at their call, they shall no longer defile and pollute the beautiful harbour of Waitemata. We await with confident anticipation the statement on the situation promised by the chairman of the Board. '•
