GAS COMPANIES.
—Regarding t,ho action now. being taken against the Feilding Gas Company, I presume that it is not generally known that of about 1000 gas companies carrying on their operations in England, only about '400 are working under statutory powers. Socio of the non-statutory companies have been, in operation for probably three-quarters of a century, and during this time have been able to successfully carry on. No doubt, as in New Zealand, they were commenced at the request of the inhabitants to supply a public want, the same as any other trading concern, and as long as they faithfully carry out this in a reasonable way they are nol interfered with. Every pound of expenditure has to bo. considered in installing gas works in small towns, and this may have deterred some from going to the expense of getting a special Act. Most of the NewZealand companies who have statutory powers have obtained these after they had been in operation some time. H. Atkixsox.
