John Strong,,;a comparatively young man, was charged that on January ;16, at' Epsom, he did assault a little girl ' uyder the age of 11 years, with intent to commit a crime. " The accused ,Was further charged - with common assault. Prisoner, who was defended by Mr. J. R. Ltmdon, pleaded not guilty. From" the facts, as stated, it appeared that the little girl was 'driving a cow along the road when she met accused, who partly induced' and partly carried her into an adjoining paddock. ' A lady was passing at the time, and the . accused endeavoured to shield his quarry from, sight, but she cried put to be allowed to go home. The lady (Miss Mowbray) then went over into the paddock 'and brought the child away, the prisoner meanwhile . slinking off. BotH /child and. Miss Mowbray related how she recognised the prisoner again in Queenstreety when. he showed, that' he knew her t also by "grinning at her. Then, later, she 1 pointed him out to Detective Miller, in Fort-street, and the man was arrested. She J- had .been. looking for him for about an hour that-morning.
