THE CITY BATHS.

SOME SUGGESTED SCHEMES. REPORT BY CITY ENGINEER, The question of the bathing facilities in the city and suburbs formed the subject of an exhaustive report -which was presented to theO'ty Council at its meeting last evening by the city engineer (Mr. W. E. Bush). In referring to the recent improvements at the Albert-street baths, Mr. Bush stated that the effect had been a largo increase in the number of people using the baths, and the receipts since the baths were reopened on December 7 last had amounted to. £161. The difficulty of obtaining a suitable site for sea baths at the eastern end of the city still existed, to a large extent principally owing to the discharging of raw sewage at all stages, of the tide. As to the proposed baths at 'Shelly Beach, Poneonby, he considered that the Council had done wisely in deferring this project until the proposal as to an esplanade had taken more definite shape, but he was of opinion that dressing sheds for both sexes might be erected at the end of Shelly Beach Road, and that if possible, an attendant should be appointed to look after them, and a small charge made for the use of the sheds. In regard to the other beaches, he did not think that the time was ripe for the erection of dressing sheds. Mr-. Bush concluded by stating the main suggestions of his report, viz.: —(1) Provision of dressingßoora accommodation at Shelly Beach; (2) provision of swimming baths m Victoria Park, in conjunction with the utilisation of waste heat from the destvuetor a.nd power station, or alternatively at Hobson-street and Custom-street to utilise the warm salt condensing water from the tramway power house; (3) the securing of a site for baths and salt water reservoir in the neighbourhood of &ymondsstreet and Khyber Pass. Ho also suggested the approaching of the Harbour 'Board as to sea baths in the neighbourhood of Hobson-street Wharf.

The Mayor (Mr. A. M. Myers) said ho did not think the Council need hesitate in regard to the recommendation to provide dressing sheds at Shelly Beach. He moved that the engineer be "authorised to expend a sum not exceeding £200 in this direction. , v

Mr. A. J. En'trican, in seconding the motion, suggested that the unused portion of the Jewish cemetery at the corner of Karangahape • Road and Syinond-street would form an excellent site for baths. He thought, that the Jewish residents should be approached on the subpect. After some further; discussion, the Mayor agreed to a suggestion from Mr. ? Parr to allow tho matter to stand over till next meeting, the Streets Committee-to go into the subject in the meantime.. '•
