Ik recording in the last Gazette that the estimated population of the Dominion at the end of last year was 989,560, the Regis-trar-General gives some details of the vita! statistics of the year, which are of general [ interest. The number of Chinese in New Zealand J on December 31, he says, was estimated ! to be 2724, of whom 59 were females. Excluding Maoris, the population increased by 20,763, or at the rate of 2.23 per cent., during the year. To this increase, excess of births over deaths contributed 15,003, and excess of arrivals over departures 5730. The birth-rate for the Dominion in 1907 was 27.31 per 1000 of mean population, and the death-rate 10.95, as against 27.08 and 9.31 respectively in 1906. The deaths in 1907 (10,067) were greater ihan the number registered in 1906 (8359) by 1723, and the rate per 1000 rose from 9.31 to 10.95. The number of marriages (excluding those contracted between Maoris) solemnised in 1907 is estimated at 8170, giving a, rate of 8.89 per 1000 of the mean population, against 7592 and 8.48, the actual number and rate in 1906.
