FIGHTING IN MOROCCO.
ATTACK BY FRENCH FORCES.
MOORS BADLY BEATEN. By Telegraph —Press Association.— (Received .T.muary 18. 12.40 in.) Morocco, January IT. General Damate, commanding the French forces, with four battalions of infantry, three squadrons of cavalry, and a battery of artillery, fought for 16 hours an obstinate battle in the Settat Pass against Mulai Rachid's army reinforced by the Shawi tribesmen who participated in the last massacre. Heavy losses were inflicted by the French and Mulai Rachid's camp beyond the pass was destroyed- and his followers scattered, so that they will be unable, as was their purpose, to keep the passage clear for Mulai Hafid's advanee on Fez. The casualties on the French side were slight. THE RIVAL SULTANS. Morocco, January 16. An attempt to re-establish, the authority of Sultan Abdul Aziz at Fez, where the ■ Pretender Mulai Hafid was recently proclaimed, has failed.
