A new syndicate has been formed to work the cinnabar deposits at Waitahuna, Otago, and is endeavouring to carry out further developments. The working members of the syndicate have sunk a new* shaft on the main" lode, and have got indications of cinnabar for a depth of 18ft, but, water is troubling them in this shaft. The Dunedin Star states that it' is evident that while this sinking from the surface may be well enough merely as experimentalor prospecting work, it is profitless as a means of developing the property. The engineer, it is understood, strongly favours the .prosecution of- the . drive. which _he says must, if continued. pierce the intersection of the lode it is in with the proved lode. The miners seem somewhat sceptical.of the surveyor's instrument and plans based on measurement of lines and angles, and are inclined, from eye observation in very deceptive country, to believe that the branch lode cuts through the hill behind the drive, and is making away from it instead of towards it. The syndicate now awaits the engineer's report, and it is likely that extension of the drive, as the best means of developing the mine, will soon be once more in progress.
