NEWCASTLE COAL TRADE.
THE YEAR'S SHIPMENTS. Tile following return, supplied by Mr. H. Fox, district superintendent of railways, and prepared by Captain G. B. Knowles, berthing-master, shows the shipments of coal, coke, etc., at the Government wharves, Newcastle, during the year ended December 31, 1907:—Coal shipped, 4,586,918 tons, coke 12,978 tons, as compared with 3,906,375 tons and 6096 tons respectively in 1906, being an increase of 680,543 tons coal and 6882 tons coke. The shipments in tho Basin alone were: Coal 1,571,447 tons, coke 3418 tons, as against 1,112,435 tons and 1897 tons respectively, being an increase of 459,012 tons coal and 1521 tons coke. Live stock was shipped as follows: Horses 231, cattle 117, sheep 1524. The steamers loaded numbered 2653, sailing vessels 593 loaded and 283 stiffened, lighters loaded 28, tugs coaled 324. The waggons shipped were best coal, 144,891£ small, 3620 coke; total, 644.235.
