ENTERTAINMENTS.

OPERA HOUSE.

Ft'LtEtt's Advanced Vaudeville Company appeared before a good house last night. Nellie Ma.her sang "You're Not the Only Rosebud," followed by a cleverly-executed dance, and Mclvin and Frawley caused much amusement with their humorous sketch. The second series of pictures of " Living Ireland " were very interesting. Jarvis and Martyn (jugglers), Salmon and Chester, Bert Sharp, . Malvcna Moore, Joseph Smithson, and the Scyffer Twins also appeared. " BREWSTER'S MILLIONS." Now and again in a desert of melodrama and cheap comedy there comes to the theatre-going public a performance that not; only titillates a jaded palate (says a Christchurch critic), but appeals through its cleanliness and its spontaneous humour to tho most blase habitue of the theatre. " Brewster's Millions " is a play of this character. From tho high reputation achieved elsewhere by the new comedy great interest is being evinced by playgoers in its first production at His Majesty's Theatre to-morrow evening by Mr. J. C. Williamson's company. " Brewster's Millions " is said to be a play that is as delightfully refreshing as it is wholesome. It is full of situations and excitement,, and its interest never for a moment flags. The awful recklessness of Montgomery Brewster, the possessor of a quarter of a million of money, which he has to spend in a stated time, in order to entitle him to a still .larger fortune of two millions, is the theme of the piece, and in the spending of his money he is as a millionaire run -mad. His friends are unaware'of the situation, and do everything to prevent his seemingly headlong rush to ruin and misfortune. His efforts to get rid of his , money are said to be full of incident. The popular young actor, Mr. Thomas Kingston, who, it will be remembered, was here supporting Miss Tittei Brune, will appear as the spendthrift millionaire. Additional interest will be lent to the production by the reappearance of Mrs. Robert Brough. The mounting and dressing of tho new comedy ; will be on an elaborate scale, one scene — that of Br yacht in a storm—being described as a triumph of stagecraft. It presents a yacht floundering helplessly in the trough of a huge sea, and its final rescue by a large steamer, which looms up in the distance. This scene represents what is claimed to be the ■nigh-water mark of stage realism in Australasia, and Mr. Williamson, in the elaboration of its production, is said to have eclipsed his own record. Big booking has taken place at Wildman and Aroy's, where tho plans are on view.
