THE INDRAMAYO. Tiny Tvser liner Indramayo, under charter to the Shaw, Savill end Albion Company, arrived from Wellington yesterday morning and berthed tit the Queen-street Wharf. The Indramayo is taking largo lines of wool, pelts, flax, timber, etc., and is expected to leave for Londoo direct about Monday next. THE LOUISA CRAIG. The barque Louisa. Craig wao floated out. of the Auckland Dock yesterday afternoon after cleaning and painting, and berthed at Quay, street Jetty No. 2, where she took in a large quantity of ballast. Last night the barque left for Whangarei in tow of the p.s. Lyttelton, where she takes in a part cargo of timber for Melbourne, and then leaves for the Thames to complete her loading. . A GOOD RACE. On October 1 last the barque Trongate and the Norwegian barque Victor left Newcastle, coalladen for Valparaiso. They cleared the port within three hours of one another, and at the time it was predicted that a good race could be looked for. That has been borne out by the arrival of both vessels at their destination on November 22, ,being then 52 days Out. THE SOFALA. The steamer Sofala arrived from Calcutta and Samarang last night and anchored in the stream to await Customs and medical inspection. The steamer brings a cargo of general merchandise and will berth at the Queen-street Wharf this morning to discharge. THE LOONGXNA.—RECORD STEAMING. Within the last week the Union Steam Ship Company'* turbine steamer Loongana ha* broken her own record between the west pile light and the Gellibrand light in Port Phillip (aays the Argus). When the Loongana arrived at Melbourne three years ago on her trial between these lights her time was. 66 minutes going and 65 minutes returning. She has cut the " going" time down to 65 minutes, and recently she came up the "return" journey in 63 minutes. This is a great performance for shallow water. The distance is 20i miles BIG LINERS. Frequent mention baa been made in various quarters of the designing and building of larger vessels than the Mauretania and Lusitania (says a London exchange). There is no mechanical difficulty in carrying out such a scheme with the expressed intention of gaining greater sea speed, but at present a very grave hindrance exists—one that in a financial sense raises questions of serious -importance. All vessels require docking and wharf accommodation, and the number of natural harbours with channels of approach easily navigable by vessels of great length and great draught is extremely limited. The artificial construction of ports and of deep channels of approach is a costly investment, and their conservation causes perennial outlay on a lavish scale. The Panama Canal and the German canal afford ample warning of coming responsibility for incalculable outlay, which may or may. not prove to be remunerative either directly or indirectly. It is*, common knowledge that the designs "tor the Mauretania and Lusitania had to be drafted with a studied regard for the wharf and berthing accommodation available at the western terminus of their ordinary voyage.
