POLICE COURT NEWS.

ALLEGED ASSAULT. Ax the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. C. C. Kettle, S.M.„ three boys— Patterson, Alfred Irwin, and James Newaid— charged on remand with having indecently assaulted a young girl on -Monday. Afte? the evidence for the prosecution the indictment was amended to include the names of the three girls who were connected with the alleged offence. The accused pleaded not guilty, and were committed for trial. Bail was allowed. ALLEGED ATTEMPTED MURDER. The case against- A. McTavish, -who caused a sensation on the wharf a few weeks ago .by shooting at a ship's officer and then attempting to commit suicide, was again called on. As the accused was still confined to the hospital a further remand was granted. A WHANGAREI CASE. A young man, Nicholas Albert Maddern, was charged with breaking and entering the dwelling of Johanna Olson at Kiripaka on the Ist inst., and stealing about £180. On the application of Sub-Inspec-tor Gordon. Mr. R. W. Dyer, S.M., remanded the accused to appear at Whangarei on Thursday. YOUNG WOMAN IN TROUBLE. Ivy Irene Snodgrass, a young, plainlydressed woman, appeared before _ Mr. Dyer on a charge of stealing £2 Bs* the property of Miss McKenzie. She admitted the theft. _. I Chief-Detective Marsack stated that the defendant was staying at a boardinghouse, but later had some domestic trouble and took to drink. When in this state she stole the money. Defendant agreed to go to the Door of Hope, and on this condition, Mr. Dyer ordered her to come up for sentence when called upon. FLAX-CUTTING DISPUTE. Messrs. Elder and Whiteside, who are engaged in the flax industry in the North, sued the Otamatea County Council for breach of contract. Mr. J. Beale appeared lor plaintiffs, and Mr. J. R. Reed for the defendant Council. It was stated that the Council had granted Mr. Whiteside the right to cut flax growing on certain roads in the district and Whiteside sold his rights to Elder. Then a dispute arose between the parties and the Council. Questions of law were argued at length. Decision was reserved. MISCELLANEOUS. Samuel -Heyworth, charged with stealing 3s 6d, the property of his employer, was remanded for eight days. Ada Kwai, who was charged with using obscene language, in Albert-street, was remanded for medical treatment for a week. The defendant collapsed in the courtroom and had to be assisted out by a constable.

Norman Burke was ordered to pay 5s per week towards the support of his illegitimate child. He was also ordered to pay £6 costs and incidental expenses. George Onion was ordered to pay 4s per week towards the support of each of his two children.

Two first offenders for drunkenness were convicted and fined.
