The secretary of the Waihi Schools Com-, mittee (Mr, Harper) has been advised by the Auckland Education Board that » grant of £300 has been made by the De partrnent for additional accommodation at the East End public school. * Mr. J. Kartell, architect to the Auckland Education Board, will visit Waihi on Thursday next for the purpose of holding an inquiry into the recent outbreak of fire, at the District High School. This morning, at the Police Court (Messrs. H. M. Moore and W. M. Wallmitt, .J.P.'s presiding), a man named J. R. Morrison was charged, on the information of Ronald Morton, with assault and using threatening language. Defen dant in turn charged Morton with threatening behaviour. Morrison was represented by Mr. Mueller, and Mr. Jackson ap peared for Morton. After the hearing of considerable evidence the charge of threatening language against Morrison was dismissed, and he was found guilty on the other count and fined £1 and costs £1 16s. The quarterly meeting of the Thame* Methodist Church was held last evening, the Rev. J. Blight presiding. The returns of membership showed a dccre**o of six. owing to removals from the district. The balance-sheet as adopted showed the income and expenditure to be within » few shillings of balancing. 'Hie following officers were elected for the. ensuing year.- — Circuit stewards, Messrs. F. H. Clalton anc I. J. Scott; society stewards, Messrs. .1. ' Bvokenshire, G. Horn, J. Trehmr, F. W. Hetherington, R. J. Trebelcock, and W. < Arburv; poor stewards. Messrs. M. Row* and 1'!. Hiirdman. Mr. I. J. Scott war appointed representative to the oonfercno* in Auckland, with Mr. J. L. Walton a* substitute. It was resolved to place on the minutes a. resolution expressing high appreciation of the services, to the Church of the late Mr. .1. A. Miller, and also of sympathy with Mrs. Miller and family. The monthly meeting of the Executive Committee, of" the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce was held last evening, Mr. J. W. Ellis, vice-president, prosiding. Mr. G. W. Sure, president, tendered his reeig. nation, aH he will shortly take up his residence in Dunedin. The resignation va* accepted with regret, and the secretary wai instructed to convey to Mr. Saw the committee's high appreciation of the service* he had rendered to the Chamber. Mr. J. W. Ellis was elected president, and Mr. C. L. McDiarmid vice-president. A letter •was received from the chief engineer of the Roads Department in reply to a letter front ' the Chamber asking that a trial survey be made for a road from Waikato to Kswhia, stating that there appeared to be plenty of roads surveyed already. Tie report from the superintendent of the rest room was most encouraging, and superintendent* of press work and the tent for the agricultural show wore appointed. Adjutant and Mrs. Simpson, of the local branch of the Salvation Army, have received notice of their transference to another district. MATAKfATA. The find, annual meeting in connection with the Presbyterian Homo Mission station, the headquarters of which are at Mafcam&te, was held in St. Andrew'* Church on the evening: of the Bth inst. favourable reports were read concerning the continued progress of the miasioner's work. The church, at Matamata has been lined, and suitable seats have been provided. The Ladies' Guild has for a considerable time been preparing work for a bazaar to be held in March, and the Sun-day-school iind the choir have been, successfully conducted. The member* of thevcholr undertook to raise the money to pay for a new organ, which has been iismd at the services since the opening of the church in Jaly. and the secretary (Mr. O'Connell) reported that the purchase had been completed. During the evening the choir contributed several, items. A quartette rendered by the Misses Monro and Wallace and Messrs. Smyth and Feisst was well received, and solos by Mim Monro and Mr. A. J. Long were much appreciated. Miss Seelly, of Waharoa, acted as organist. Mr. Peat gave an address appropriate to the occasion, urging the neces«tv of enthusiasm and co-operation. MANUNUI. A tennis club hae been formed, with a membership of 32, and the opening of the court took place on the 4th inst. A number of visitors were present, including members of the Kangaroa Tennis Club, and a jjleaeant afternoon was spent. The mills have resumed work after a fortnight's holiday. Bosh fires are prevalent in the district at present.
