CLOSER SETTLEMENT.

Gisbokke, Monday. Tub Commissioner of Crown Lands states that he hopes the Te Arai Estate, which was recently acquired for closer settlement by the Government, will be thrown open for selection early in March.
A special meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was presided over last evening by the Mayor (Mr. John Eowe), for the purpose of selecting the weekly half-holiday according to statute. After the town clerk had read a lengthy petition in favour of the Wednesday halfholiday, the Mayor moved that that day be decided upon. Mr. Moody moved, as an amendment, that Saturday be fixed, and Mr. Skinner seconded this pro forma. Eventually the motion was carried. Most of the councillors were in favour of urging the Government to establish a uniform half-holiday throughout the Dominion. At a representative meeting of Auckland Bookmakers yesterday afternoon, Messrs. W. Tidyman and Alex. Phillips were appointed' as their representatives on tiie deputation of bookmakers which is to wait upon the Racing Conference at Wellington, on the 23rd inst. The object in view is to secure the adoption of a standard scale of fees for bookmakers' licenses by the different clubs using the totalisator throughout the Dominion. The inmates of the police cells last night consisted of two persons arrested on charges of drunkenness, two on charges of theft, and one on a charge of using improper language.
