Whaxgakei, Wednesday. The sitting of the Magistrate's Court today was presided over by Mr. E. W. Dyor, S.M. Frank Peters was charged with threatening behaviour and assaulting Olive Nicholson, aged 16. After hearing the evidence Mr. Dyer gave accused a severe verbal castigation. On the first charge he was ordered to pay 27s costs or 14 days' imprisonment, and on the second charge he was convicted and fined £4, or a month's imprisonment, being allowed till five p.m. that day to find the- money. A. Meldrum and four others were charged by the police with being illegally on licensed premises at the Parua Bay Hotel on Sunday, November 17, for the purpose of procuring liquor. Mr. Moody, for defendants, admitted that they visited the hotel at the time when such premises should have. been closed according to the Act. They asked for liquor, and were refused. They were all bona-fide travellers, who had lodged over three miles away the previous night. The case was dismissed. A charge against two boys of 11 and 12 years of breaking into Hoey's fruit store on Sunday night, December 8, and stealing therefrom goods to the value of 42s and 8s cash, was heard in camera, the elder culprit being ordered to receive 10 strokes of the birch, and the younger six strokes. As the medical evidence showed that the latter was in delicate health the sentence was rescinded. Judgment was given by default in the following civil cases :— Halliday v. Donoghue, £2 10s. and lis costs; Morris v. Wateford and Pohe,,£s 9s 8d and £1 7s 9d costs; Hart v. Barraclough, £3 15s and 16s costs.
