HELP FOR SHACKLETON.
SOUTH POLE EXPEDITION. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Wednesday. Lieutenant Shackleton this morning called upon Lady Ward, and in the afternoon ho paid a visit to the Hon. R. McNab, in whose historical work regarding early Southern voyages he is greatly interested. A number of Wellington merchants have presented Lieutenant Shackleton with a quantity of New Zealand butter and cheese for his expedition. A few days ago he received from a working man a letter enclosing a postal not* for haH'-a-crown towards the cost of his expedition. This was before the news of the Federal and Dominion Governments' votes had been made, and was in response to the commander's intimation that he could do with another £4000.
The man, in sending his mite along, worked out a sum in subtraction to show that there was now so much less to collect. The leader of the expedition fully appreciates the donor's interest in the work, which is apparently greater than that of some of the millionaires he interviewed.
Lieutenant Shackleton left for Christchurch to-night. Sir Philip Brocklehursfc, assistant geologist to the expedition, accompanied his chief. AN ANTARCTIC POST OFFICE. [BT TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Wednesday. The Government has authorised the issue of a certain number of New Zealand postage stamps for the use of members of the Antarctic expedition, thus practically opening a post office at King Edward Land.
