GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP.

NEW ZEALAND MEETING. . [by telegraph.—pkess association.] Napier, Friday. The New Zealand Golf Club's championship meeting was continued to-day, when there was a. fairly strong and very cold wind blowing, which greatly interfered with play An error was made yesterday in crediting Maclaren, the professional player, with winning the open championship. Arthur Duncan won the Hawke's Bay amateur championship and the open championship of New Zealand. Maclaren, as the best scorer amongst the professionals, takes the leading prize (£25) allotted to them, D. Hood taking second money (£10). 'the fourth round of the New Zealand amateur championship was played this morning, the most exciting game being that between is. Duncan and A. Smith had an easy victory over W. E. Reid. winning with six up and five to play, and it is a pity he has to play A. Duncan in the semifinal, as on form he is about second best of those remaining in. H. D. Bam ford and Major Gordon played an exceedingly close game, Bamford winning by one up nS the 20th hole. 11. B. Lusk and W. Handyside also kept close together in their round. Lusk winning by one up. In the amateur bogey handicap A.. Duncan continued his wonderful run of success bywinning with one down when owing five. H. 0. Smith was second. ' NOTES ON THE PLAY. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN* CORRESrOXDENT.] Napier, ' Friday. A strong but dry sou'-wester swept across the links to-day, and a bogey handicap was played in the morning, but very few cards were completed, as the wind was too much for the average players.' A. Duncan, however, showed his prowess by going round in 79, and being only one down after giving tho colonel five strokes. H. 0. Smith, of Otago, was" next with two down, and had to give three strokes. W. Hainan, playing from the same handicap as ' Sriiitn,'" was six down. B. Woods' score was the; same as his clubmate's, but ho got two strokes from bogey. These were practically all the cards returned, one reason being that the tenth green is just in front of the clubhouse, and at that stage bogey was well up in most pases.

The fourth round of the amateur championship was played this morning. There were one or two surprises, for Bamford., of Auckland, beat Kettle, of Dunedin, and Reid, of Wellington, beat Ritchie, of Rangitikei. both matches being three up and two to play. The game between Fisher, of Dunedin, and K. Duncan, of Wellington, | was Tory close, and only finislied at the 21st hole. Golfers will remember the game between these players at the Auckland championship meeting two years ago," and the match to-day was' very similar, as .Fisher beat Duncan in the long game, only to be beaten in the short game, Duncan's long putts were at times phenomenal. The other games in this round resulted as follows: — Gordon beat Lynch, Lusk (Christchurch) beat |)argaville (Auckland), Handyside beat Armstrong (Oamaru), A. Duncan' beat H. Wright (Timaru), and H. C. Smith beat Tumbull (Otago). The fifth round was played in the afternoon, the results being as follows: — Bamford (Auckland) beat Major Gordon at the 20th hole, and Lusk beat Handyside, one up at the 18th hole, although at one time he was two down. This was a good game, but the number of spectators made it difficult to watch the short game. A. Duncan beat his brother, eight up and seven to play, and Smith beat Reid, six up and five to 'play. To-morrow, in' the semi-final, Lusk, of Christchurch, will meet Bamford, of Auckland, and the South Island man should win without much trouble, as Dr. Bamford has been lucky in the draw, and has not met any sera men yet. A. Duncan will play Smith, of Dunedin, and although the latter will make Duncan do his best, still the Wellington player should win. The final will be played on Monday, and if Lusk is runner-up to Duncan this will be the second year in succession that Shirley has sent a man into the final, but only to' be beaten by a North Islander. To-night the Hawke's Bay ladies gave a ball to the visitors.
