NOTES ON THE PLAY. [BY TKLKGHAI'H.—OWN COHRKSFONDENT.] Napier, Thursday. This morning' was bright with sunshine, but heavy showers again fell during the afternoon. The chief feature of to-day's play lias been A. Duncan's splendid medal score of 76. The driving, approaching, and putting were all excellent, with the exception of a short putt missed at the 10th hole, and Colonel Bogey with his minions was no less than six down to the Wellington player. The following were the strokes at the various'holes, and the bogey score is given in brackets:— Out, 5 (5), 3 (3), 4, (5), 5 (5), 4 (4), 5 (5), 4 (5), ,4 (5), 3 (3)—37 and (40); home, 5, (4), 6 (6), 5 (6), 3 (4), 4 (4), 5 (5), 3 (3), 4 (5), 4 (s)— and (42): totals, 76 and .(82). ; • ; Much interest was taken -in the play of the professionals, but on the whole they were very disappointing to follow. _ They "rarely get an opportunity to play in competitions, however, in New Zealand, and [probably all were nervous, and also overzealdus about their reputations. Maclaren, of Dun-edm, went round in 85, his card being as follows:—Out, 5, 3, 4, 5, 4, 5, 7, 5, 3—41; in, 4, 8,5,4, 5, 5, 3, 5, 5—44: total 85. David Hood's card read:—Out, 4, 3, 5, 7, 4, .4, 5, 5, 5—42; in, 5, 6, 6, , : 4, 5, 5, 4, 5, 6—'-16: total, 88. Fred Hood, of Auckland, went round in 82, as follows:—Out, 4, 3, 5, 8, 4, 5, 5, 4, 3—41; home, 5, 5, 6, 3, 4, 4, 3, 5, 6—41. Herd, of Christcliurch took 86, his score being:—Out, 5, 3, 5,* 4, 3, 6, 6, 8, 4—44; home, 4, 5, 6, 5, 5, 6, 2, 5, 4—42. Clements, of Auckland is still quite a youth, bint shows much promise, and his two rounds of 86 each are very consistent. To-day his card read:—Out, 6. 4, 5, 7, 4. 5, 6, 5, 4—46; home, 4, 6, 5, 4, 4, 5, 2, 5, 5—40. Maclareu's total for the 36 holes (18 on Tuesday and 18 to-day) was 167. David Hood registering 168, Fred Hood and Herd 169, and Clements' 172.
\ The best match' this -afternoon in the amateur championship was that between Bidwell, of Masterton, and Handysicle, of Wellington, the latter being one up tit the 18th hole. Both were long drivers, but their putting* was not good. At the 10th 'hole Bidwcll was three down, but by stubborn play he got his opponent's score clown to donny two, won the 17th, and lost the 18th by slicing his drive, and getting a bad lie for his second.
