The Northern Company's sveaniei Ngopuhi leaves at 6 p.m. to-day for Russell, Whangaroa, and Mangonui in place of the Clansman, which lays up for general overhaul. At 7 o'clock this. evening Jtlie Northern Company's steamer Chelmsford leaves for Kuaotunu, Wliangaponp, and Mercury Bay. The Melanesia!! Mission steamer Southern Cross was floated out of the Auckland Dock on Saturday after cleaning and painting. On Saturday the Norwegian barque Solgran sailed for Mercury Bay to load timber for Melbourne. The following regulation under the Sydney Harbour Trust Act, 1900, is gazetted :—" Every artificial light- used on any vessel in the port shall l«» securely enclosed and in charge of a trustworthy petson. The -master of the vessel shall be responsible for the observance of this regulation." At the launch of the oil-tank steamer Iroquois by Messrs. Holland and Wolff, Belfast, at the end of June, Mr. A. SI. Carlisle stated that on account of the action of the Belfast Harbour Board his fit m would never increase the acreage of the yard at Belfast. Any other work they had to do would go to the Clyde. George Thompson and Co., Limited, are building a new steamer to be named the Pericles, after their famous'sailing ship ec well known in her time in the Australian trade. A sister ship to the record-size steamer being built at Belfast for the Hamburg-American line is to be constructed later on at the new yard of the Stettin Vulcan now being laid down at Hamburg. Her dimensions will be 735 ft by 88ft by 35ft.' THE ORARI. The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Orari arrived -from Waitara on Saturday afternoon to take in frozen, meat and general cargo for London. The steamer leaves for Wellington to-morrow tc complete her loading and leaves for the Home port early next month. THE ZEALANDIA. The. Huddait-Parker steamer Zealandia, Captain Dunsford, arrived from Southern and East Coast ports at 2.30 p.m. yesterday and berthed at the Queen-street Wharf. The steamer left Dunedin on Tuesday last- and called at the usual coast ports, leaving Gishorno at 3 p.m. on Saturday and arriving as above. Experienced light variable winds, moderate sea, and fine weather to arrival. The Zealandia leaves for Sydney at 5.30 p.m. to-day. A ROUGH PASSAGE. The British barque Dunearn, with 1,300,000 ft of Ted wood, arrived at Sydney recently from Eureka (British Columbia). 'During a severe gale «, large portion of the red wood planks which were stacked on the deck became loosened and were washed overboard. The timber was swept about the deck, and the crew had some narrow escapes from being injured by the floating planks. NIPPON YUSEN KAISHA. For some time the Nippon Yusen Kaisha have been chartering extra steamers to supply their requirements for special cargo and outside ports. They have now decided to put on three extra cargo steamers of their own for this purpose, namely, the .Colombo Mam, the Ceylon Mam, and the Bombay Maru, and until other steamers arc added extra vessels will be chartered as required in order to maintain monthly sailings. These steamers will load from Middlesbrough, Antwerp, and sometimes London, for outside places such as Formosa, .Manila, Nagasaki, Moji, Port Arthur, etc.. when inducement offers. THE APARIAIA. The Union Company's steamer Aparima, Captain E. Stott. arrived" from Fiji last night-with a large cargo of raw sugar, --opra, etc. The -iteamer left Suva on August 21 and met with fine weather until the morning of the 23td, thence strong head winds and seas prevailed to arrival. The Aparima goes up to Chelsea this morning, and on discharge leaves for Sydney, where she will be docked. THE SQUALL. The Union Company's steamer Squall, Captain J. Benton, arrived from Napier, Gieboine, and coast porta late last night and berthed at the Railway Wharf. THE WANAKA. The Union Company's steamer Wanaka. Captain W. Stevens, arrived from the South at 11.30 p.m. ; yesterday with a cargo of grain and produce. The steamer left. Tiruaru on Tuesday last and met with fine weather to the East Cape, thence : strong head winds and seas to arrival. j THE VICTORIA. The Huddart-Parker steamer Victoria, Captain j William Waller, an ived from Sydney shortly before 6 p.m. yesterday, and, being "granted pratique, berthed at the" Hobspn-street Wharf. The steamer left Sydney at 6.25j?p.m. on Wednesday last and experienced a s|jroiig south-west gale, with mountainous sea and" fine clear weather, till 8 a.m. on the 24th, thence moderate southerly wind and sea, with fine clear weather, to arrival. I The Victoria leaves for East Coast and Southern I ports to-morrow afternoon. ' THE DEVON. The steamer Devon is duo to-day from Liverpool and Cai>etown. THE SUSSEX. The steamer Sussex, from Glasgow and Liverpool, arrived in port on Saturday evening after a very good voyage. Captain Robertson is still in command, with Mr. Griffiths as chief engineer, the other officers being the same as when the l steamer visited Auckland on her last voyage. The steamer loft Glasgow on June 23 and experienced fine weather across the Bay of Biscay, and strong south-east winds to the Cape of* Good Hope, which was rounded on the evening of July 26. Strong winds and gales then prevailed to' Tasmania, mostly from between north-west and west, followed by strong west-south-west winds, increasing to a moderate gale in the Tasman Sea, with a very high sea, lasting until arrival. TRANSHIPMENTS. The Zealandia, which arrived from the South yesterday, brought up transhipments per Athenic from London. The Victoria, whlcn arrived from Sydney lastevening, brought transhipments per China from London, Unita Irom Calcutta, Pacitlque from New Caledonia, Empire from China and Japan, Armand Behic from France, Moana from Vancouver, and Australian coastal steamers. THE ALEXANDER CRAIG. I The barque Alexander Craig, Captain Irvine, of the. J. J. Craig line, arrived from Newcastle yesterday afternoon.' The master reports sailing from the New South Wales coal port on August 17 and experienced light, north-west and west winds and flue weather until making the Three Kings on August 23, thence strong west-south-west gale, with heavy seas, followed by frequent heavy rain squalls, to arrival.
