TROUT OVA.

A . wkkk or two ago a correspondent of the Hot Lakes Chronicle; suggested that trout ova should he obtained from the fish in Lake Tarawera in preference to taking it from those that had ascended the streams that How into Lake' Rotorua. Mr. Ayson, curator, was consulted'on the matter, and a reply has been received by the.Tourist Department from that gentleman. Mr. Ayson'.s experience goes to show that'eggs taken from the fish of Lake Tarawera have been unsatisfactory; they proved weak in the outer shell, and the percentage that fertilised was very poor in comparison with the eggs collected from the best fish taken from the Fairy Spring stream and the Waiieti. The eggs taken .from the Tarawera fish, when within 10 days of hatching, burst (batched I prematurely), and the loss was. therefore, very great. For breeding purposes, the,) in Lake Rotorua. are regarded as much superior to those of Lake Tarawera. The best results obtained last- year were from ova procured from fell at the head of the Waiteti stream. It is only the strongest fish, in Mr. Ayson'fi opinion, that reach the heads of the streams, and his experience is that ova obtained from these fish is much better than from fish nearer the lake.
