THE GLENCOE MASSACRE.
The most important item in a sale of historical autographs and documents at Messrs. Puttick and Simpson's Rooms, London, was the order to Captain Robert Campbell, of Glenlyon, signed by R. S. Duncanson, for the extermination of the Clan McDonald at Gleneoe, dated February 12, 1692, a folio document consisting of 23 lines in the following terms: — " You are hereby ordered to fall upon the Rebells. the McDonalds of Gleneoe, and putt all to the sword under seventy. You are to have a speciull care that the old ffox and his sones doe upon no occount escape your hands you are to secure all the avenues that no mail escape. This you are to putt in executione att fyve of '-he clock precisely: and by that time or verie shortly after it I'll strive to lie att you with a stronger party; if I doe not come to you alt fyve, you are not to tnry for me. butt to fall on. This is by the King's special command, for the good' and salty of the country, that these miscreants be cutt oft' root and branch. See that this be putt in executione without feud or favour, else you may expect to be dealt with as one not true to King nor Government, nor a man fit t to cary Commissione in the King's Service. Expecting you will not fa ill in the fulfilling hereof, as you love your selfc. I subscribe these with my hand att Balicholis ft'eb. 12, 1692. " (So) Eo. Bidding began at £50, Mr.'' Tregaskis finally securing the MS. for £1400. .. , The M.S. orginally belonged to a Parhcll resident, Auckland, New Zealand,
