L. PRICE OF CITY WATER.

1 . *» j A REQUEST FROM PARNELL. A I)ei:i;tatio\ from the Parnell Borough '.Council waited on the Auckland City Conncil last night with a. view to securing a re'duction in the water rates charged in that i borough. .Mr. R. B. Lusk, who acted as ! principal spokesman, stated that the Parnell Council had made a similar application I to the City Council some time ago, but were [told to -apply again when connection was (established with the Waitakerei Falls, when [something might be done to meet their request. This connection having now been brought about they thought that the time had arrived to renew the application. He I then went on to show how the consumption jof water in the borough had increased by I leaps and bounds during recent years, ana that no reduction whatever had been made : since 1902, when the rates were fixed at lOd | per 1000 gallons for water from the Ponsonby reservoir, and Is per 1000 gallons from the Khyber Pass. He understood that the jcost to the city was 6d per 1000 gallons, land the city was charging them nearly 100 i per cent, more, which he submitted was i hardly fair. j The Mayor of Parnell (Mr. G. W. Baslev) and Mr. J. R. Lundon, the other members lof the deputation, also spoke. The Mayor (Mr. A. M. Myers) said that what the City Council said in reply to the Parnell Borough Council's former "application- was that the matter would be looked into when the scheme, was completed. This, however, had not be done, and there was !still a large amount of work to do which i would occupy a. considerable time. The Parnell residents, who were using so much [water, ought to be thankful to the Auckland City Council for being able to supply [them with enough water to meet their demands. As far as the cost to the city was concerned 6d per 1000 gallons had* been] mentioned, but in this estimate the item of interest on the cost of construction had evidently not been taken into consideration, and it was a very large item. He moved a motion to the effect that as the scheme was not yet completed the Council was unable to accede to the request of Parnell. The motion was seconded and carried. __^______________
