SPORTING NOTES.

[BY FHAETOX.I | The Gisborne Racing Club open their winter meeting to-morrow, and, with a number of Auckland-owned horses engaged, the racing at the East Coast gathering will, no doubt, command some local attention.! Loch Fyne is engaged in the Park Steeplechase, with lOst 121b, and he will probably | prove hardest to beat: in that event. Mr. J. Daly, bandicapper to the Axistralian Jockey Club, has not chanced any-! I tiling with the Auckland-bred Putty in the I Metropolitan .Stakes, Bst 111!> being the imipost allotted the son of St. Leger in the ; I mile and a-half race. It is quite possible that- Putty can be made as good a horse as [when he won the Auckland Cup of 1905, ibut, even admitting that fact, the conten--liion could, I think, still be legitimately ad-1 Ivanccd that he is over-estimated in being! called upon to carry Bst 111b in a race such I ja.s the Metropolitan Handicap. j j The A'.B.C. Grand National Hurdle Pace lis set down for decision at Flemington on (Saturday next. At last advices 31 horses j i remained in the race, and a cablegram of I Monday's date states that, on the strength of a victory in the Mooneo 'Valley Hurdle Race, the New Zealand-bred horse Lion] !Heart ruled equal favourite, with l'rcston- • pans. Ah Lion Heart figures-in the race I with 9?t 611). weight should not 'keep him lout of a victory. The distance of the race! I extends to three miles, and he will require: !to be a true .--raver (o win. j I At tin; Gisborne Racing Club's Winter | .Meeting last, year Loch i'yuc scored his! 1 first victory over country, and it was a] double win that was credited to him at the! JKast, Coast meeting. The little sou of! I Locii Ness was in good nick when shipped' to Gisborne on Saturday last, and matters j may be said U> be favourably positioned for Ihim to increase his winning record. j i Annoyed, who was shipped to Gisborne ; last week, figures amongst the acceptances for the Winter Oats Handicap and Plying j Handicap, which events come up for de-j cision to-morrow at the Gisborne Racing Club's meeting. I i The stallion Marshal Soult, recently purI chased from Mr. A. Hughes, of Onehunga, by Mr. D. Hepburn, of Gisborne, was shippod to his new home on the East Coast yesterday by the s.s. Victoria. I " j The Pnkuranga Hunt Club meet on j Saturday next, at noon, at the kennels. By I advertisement in another column a special! [invitation is extended to farmers. ! The Auckland-bred gelding King Paul 1 ; figures amongst the acceptances for the, Y.R.C. Grand National Hurdle Race. GISBORNE RACING CLUB'S WINTER MEETING. I The following is a list of the acceptances for I the principal events to be decided at. the Gin- ! borne Ruciiig Club's Winter Meeting to-mor-j row : — I HURDLE RACE.— Regia 10.11, Bonomiana 9.9. WINTER OATS HANDICAP.—Te Ifahui 10.8, Reservoir 10.2, Gladsniuir 9.8, Annoyed 9.7, Te UkU 9.3, San Crux 9.2, Reay 9.0. . ] I C.J.C. GRAND NATIONAL MEETING, j I - '.I [BY TM.KGBAPH.—I'HESS ASSOCIATION'.] CIiniSTCHUKCBi Tuesday. j 1 Aberration was scratched this morning for the | I Winter Cup, to be decided at the Grand National! : Meeting. i ! , INTERPEOVINCIAL GOSSIP. [I.IV TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] CANTERBURY. • ' Tuesday. • The training tracks at Ricearton were never in better order at this season of the year, and the local trainers are at least • paired the excuse of want of. (rood grounds ill? getting their horses ready for winter racing. ■iEldorslie, the two-year-old brother to Cross Battery (by Stopniak—Firccross), has been sold, and will shortly be shipped to the Chatham Islands, where he will take up stud duties. This colt was expected to develop into a. high-class racehorse till an affection in tho. head laid him aside, and eventually proved so serious as to render him useless for racing purposes. The Eirecross family has been very unlucky on the turf, Cross* Bat!cry being the only member of it that has lasted long enough to earn fame, and oven she is under suspicion now. . After all, Irish has been nominated for the steeplechase events at the Grand National meeting, and so also has Loch Fyne. In some way the nominations of the two Auckland horses were omitted from the published lists. How this happened I do not know, but it is at least satisfactory to know that the field for the Grand National Steeplechase is likely to be strengthened by their presence. While riding the hunter John Keel over the steeplechase fences at Riecarton on Friday, the well-known jockey McChisky had a nasty fall, which resulted in a broken collarbone. Lady Annie was lame after galloping last Tuesday, but a rest for a few days was . evidently sufficient, as she appears all rignt again. The Otago horse, Jack Ashore, has arrived at Riecarton, in view of the Grand National meeting. ! Taking advantage of the tine weather, the j trainers have been giving their jumpers I plenty of schooling. Idasa and Stronghold ! gave a satisfactory display over hurdle?, but I Probable, who went, with them, was disap- j i pointing. In a siibsoquenT gallop over the obstacles Probable fell, ?o that I up to the present he cannot be regarded as a success at hurdling. Idasa 'is improving very much as a jumper, and |she looks Tike proving very successful at. I that branch of racing. Crispcnot, the half-brother to Rufus, was schooled twice last week, and each time he fenced in attractive style. ! .Tolly Roger, who is a recent addition to | the ranks of tho hurdle, brigade, is shaping iverv well at his new duties. | Pattypan, another recruit, is also acquitting himself with credit. Kvenlodo is still on flic_ easy list. His near foreleg bears a suspicious appearance, and 1 am afraid his prospects for next month arc not, bright. R. .). .Mason was down from Yaldhurst this morning with nine of his team. Count Wit to and Bonaform, who were included among the visitors, look forward and well. j WELLINGTON. I : Tuesday. Romany Lad, who won the two principal jumping events at the Napier Park meeting, is a full brother to Romany Girl, a mare with a good number of hurdle races to htv credit. Romany Lad claims as half brot'.fcv The Guard, who won a good place 'amongst New Zealand steeplechasers. The 1 horses named arc the only produce of the well-bred Yattaway (Nordenfeldt— ' Romany Lad was sired in 1896, and will therefore be 11 years old in a few weeks. : Romany Lad won several hurdle races some ' seasons' back, when owned by W. Holmes, and ridden by A. Hall. He passed into the : hands of his "present owner for a small sum, | and was successful at Horowhenua in March: i last. Hugh Telford, who has ridden Romany Lad in all races since he carried his |present owner's colours, advised that he, be l tried at steeplechasing. So far the result Mis very satisfactory, the gelding having add- , led 230sovs to his owner's credit by his suei ! cesses at Napier. .! Shrapnel Shell made his reappearance at • !tho Napier Park meeting after a year's ah- • Lsence from the tracks. He failed to show ijany of his old-time dash. , I The Wairarapa-owned Mataari. who ap- , ! pears to be getting back to his host form, [won a race on tho concluding day of the Napier Park meeting, but was, beaten in a '! second attempt. M Laviiiia, who won the Hurdle Race at the Napier Park meeting, was bought last Easter lor £100 by the racing man whose nom ! de course is Mr. B. Clinton. ; The handicaps for the Wellington Steepleichase meeting are due on Saturday next. ! From Bulls it is reported that C. Jenkins ' [recently injured one of hi- arms through : falling on a scythe, and that he will not be '■able to ride at the Wellington meeting. ' j George Price is returning from Sydney for the local meeting, and when his services are not. required by W. Davie?, no doubt hell will don the I'orirua colours. ,A(. Trcntham on Wednesday morning ; I Black Squall (R. McGregor) and Gold Guard . (W. Faber) jumped throe hurdles together, [and shaped satisfactorily. ■ ',

WANG AN I. | Tuesday. j The Mai-ton Racing Club intend running a double-machine in" connection with their forthcoming annual meeting in September next. Mr. Duncan Glasgow, of Turakina, recently disposed of the Auckland-bred horse LinStock "for 50-guineas to a Southern breeder.; The son of HotcblcMS and Satanella has leftj some useful stock in and around this district. A filly, two and a-half years of age, by Sir Lancelot, and one of a similar age. by j : Phaeton, have been purchased by Mr. Mc- | Lean, of the South Island. _ ._ _ f I R. Milne has under his tuition a rising] |three-year-old, colt by St. Paul from Maria. The youngster is of "a racy-looking appear-j auc, and should be abb' to gallop. j ! The same trainer is also handling an unj named two-year-old colt, by St. Paul from, a full sister to that successful performer! Carrieh, who won many races both in this] colony and in Australia. j j The Sou'-wester gelding Mahoe has made; ia steady improvement from his recent mis[hap, and, under J. Pcachey's careful super- ! vision, should be landed fit and well at the |post on New Zealand Grand National Day. j I A two-year-old filly by Sylvia Park out of the Vanguard mare Kokina strikes the! eye as one that will be able to gallop, and; accordingly should be watched. , I K. Oakenfall is putting Auratus through j his schooling over sticks, with a view to [competing in the Grand National Hurdle Race. Romany King is also acquitting him-' [self well under the tuition of the same; [trainer, who is assisted by C. Mitchell, of, jHawke's Bay. j ! I). Chapman, an erstwhile Wanganui , trainer, is at present in town with a view of securing some suitable horses to take! 'down to the West. Coast of the other Is-j ; land. ( j , — ; | POVERTY BAY TURF CLUB. j j [BY TELEGRAPH. — OWN COHKESPOXUEXT.] i : GISBOUKE, Tuesday. I At (he annual meeting of the. Poverty' Bay Turf Club this afternoon the :hairman isaid members 'could congratulate, themselves! on the financial condition of the club. The I working profit, was £992. but they had decided to write off an amount from the suspense account, and also off the. property,) amounting to £500. The balance for the] year was practically £1000. If they kept; on at that rate they would be standing on I " velvet." I He referred with pleasure to the improve-1 ments that had facilitated the work of the officers, and had won the hearty approval ■ of the public. Other improvements were i contemplated in due course, and the carc-i j talker, who was a very handy man, was all I I the time making improvements. The club was now, for the size of thej place, and the support accorded to it. one! of the most up-to-date in New Zealand, I With more life infused into the work by members, who now did not take much active! interest in the proceedings, the club would' nourish, and be a great success. He moved the adoption of the report, Mr. Maynavd seconded, and the motion was carried. Mr. J. W. Nolan was unanimously elected president. " ' I i i THE TURF IN AUSTRALIA. IJ i' .
