AN ELECTION UPHELD.
[BY TELEGRAPH.— OWN CORRESPONDENT.
Gisborne, Monday. At the Magistrate's Court this afternoon Mr. Barton, S.M., opened a petition concerning the recent election- for Waikohu riding of the Cook County Council. The candidates were Messrs. W. D. Lysnar and E. M. Hutchinson, the former being declared elected.
The petition set out that " the said election was held on June 1, 1907, when Edward Massey Hutchinson and William Douglas Lysnar were candidates, and the returning officer has returned William Douglas Lysnar as being duly elected; and your petitioners say that the booths at Motu, Whakarau, and Rakauroa were not opened, as the boxes and rolls and papers were not delivered at those places. Therefore, your petitioners pray that it may be determined that the said William Douglas Lysnar was not duly elected, and that the election was void."
| It was discovered that the names of several of the petitioner?, were not on the official roll, though they had. been inserted on the printed roll for the pill, and, there being only nine valid names to the petition, it had, therefore, to be dismissed, with one guinea costs to Mr. Lysnar.
