WELLINGTON TO AUCKLAND

THE MAIN TRUNK ROUTE. DETAILS OF THE ITINERARY. [BY TELEGRAPH. — CORRESPONDENT.] - ,"" ". .' . ■ ' Wellington, Friday. The Post to-night publishes the following for the information of any intending tripper on the Main Trunk route:-—ln one day you may go by train from Wellington to Taihape. The next day.it, is possible to take rail from Taihape to Rangataua (the journey north of . Mataroa being on the Public Works Department's train), after which there is a drive of three miles further to Ohakune. The third ' day the visitor may drive from Ohakune to the northern railhead, .at Raurimu (the gap by railway between Rangataua and Raurimu is 28 miles), and may arrive in time to catch the Public Works afternoon train down to Taumarunui. The Railway Department's train from Taumarunui to Auckland will take a fourth day. : This is easy travelling for the time of the year. The driving between the railheads is very good at: present, and the road, the railway works, and the whole outlook have improved " out of sight" during the last year or two.'Next summer the train and coach journey oyer, the Main. Trunk route will no doubt be largely patronised, and valuable services may be depended on. Already the Public Works., train is so, much used: by the travelling public that a fare is spoken of. The present ".dead-head" passengers are carried at their own risk, and if a fare was charged it would no doubt raise the question of the Department's responsibility. Some check on the growing passenger traffic will be required during the coming summer, and the problem may hasten the transfer of the, completed portions of the line. No doubt the line will; be opened to traffic as far. as possible consistent with not hampering the operations of the railway builders in any case, however big the gap between the open rails may be. The coach-owners will no doubt adapt themselves to circumstances.' . . '
