The above total of 47,731 shows an increase on the population as enumerated . in 1901 of 4588 persons, "the total then being 43,143.

It was the intention of the proprietors of the Kelly Gang entertainment (states, the Melbourne Argus) to appear at Bcnalla and Wangaratta, centres of what is' spoken of at times as " the Kelly country," but representations were made to the Chief Secretary (Sir Alexander Peacock) that it would be undesirable to permit the entertainment in those places, and he has now given orders that it shall bo prohibited from exhibiting there. It is felt that a representation of the outlaws should not be exhibited in the district where tHey spent their lives, and in which some crimes represented in the entertainment were committed, v;
