THE PAKURANGA HOUNDS.
SATURDAY was ushered in with a sou'-wester-ly gale, accompanied by intermittent showers. However, punctually at noon, the'huntsman;, whip, and hounds, of the Pakuranga Hunt Club, met about half-a-dozen enthusiastic followers at the Mangere pound, and they proceeded towards Mr. Ellett's property at Ultimata, where' through the courtesy of the owner, many,a good day's sport has been enjoyed. Oh arrival it.< was found too wet to hunt ,on the 'property, and an i adjournment was made to Mr. Gavin Wallace's property, adjoining, where some fine scoria, countrv. suitable for hunting, exists. After casting about in various directions for some time a good strong hare was started. Coming in off the scoria country on to the beach, puss made towards the mountain, and from thence on to the surrounding farm lands. -Heading for the main, road, leaving the scoria behind, and going at a good pace, the quarry gave some, good galloping over nice grass country, interspersed with stone walls, gates, and post and rail fenoee. .Puss then bearing away to the left, a check occurred.' The huntsman making a good cast, the hounds were not long in picking up the scent, puss doubling back right on to the beach. Later the hare 'made a dash towards her old haunts at the mountain/but worked back on the • beach again, where an- v other check occurred. A . iresh hare was started, but the huntsmen called the dogs off, and as it was getting late heads were turned for home. The run lasted nearly two hours, the members, nine ail 'told.- riding: straight and being well rewarded; for then' enthusiasm. The hounds held the scent well, considering the weather. The following is the list of followers:—eat on Puicanui; Mr. W. Dalton, jun., on Te Aku; Mr. Grant, on Doctor; Mr. Virtue, on Honey; Mr. Adams, on Brian O'Lynn; Mr. Ben Myers, on Bowler; Mr. Dennison on a handsome bay; the huntsman (Mr. Selby), on Barrister, and the whip on Boxer. ,-,«,•
