AN AUSTRALIAN ON NEW ZEALAND.
WORKMEN BETTER OFF IN AUSTRALIA. By Telegraph.—Frew Association.—Copyright. : ''- ■ Sydxey, May 24. Mr. J. Reid, of Adelaide, president of the Federal' Chamber of Manufactures, addressing a meeting of the members yesterday, gave his impressions received on his re. cent visit to New Zealand. He said New Zealand was the colony for the New Zea- ■ landers; that was to say, they wished to be independent of Australia. It was protectionist and in the forthcoming revision of : the tariff Australian products would be practically excluded. The Labour element appeared to be dominant. The colony appeared to be in a prosperous state, but Australian workmen who had gone there, were returning to the Commonwealth. Although these men had been earning higher wages in New Zealand,. the other conditions existing made living dearer. When all considerations 'were 'summed up, the Australian workmen were .better -off in Australia, than they would be in New Zealand. ',•'„'
In reply to a question with reference to the coal mines, Mr. Reid said the mines under the control of the Government bad had the effect of peeping down '; prices.
