At Todmorden Church (England) vestry meeting, Mr. George Peel, schoolmaster, took objection to the re-election of the aidesmen. The ' qualification for office, judging from the holders, appeared to be the possession of a long beard. The way people coming to church were pitchforked into pews, some on the "Go to heaven side and some on ) the; other, was shameful. k ßut the poor had no friends. (
