. : , ONE-TREE HILL DOMAIN-. - { A MEETING ■of the One-tree Hill Domain I Hoard was held on Thursday. There j were present: Mr Ctoas. Baglcy (chairman), i Sir John Logan Campbell, Messrs. F. W. Lang, M.H.8.. J. Howe, and W. R. Bloomfield. A deputation from the Auckland Golf Jlvib, consisting .of Messrs. H.'.Gilfillan and W. B. Col beck;: waited upon the Board in- reference \ to the renewal 'Cot f the lease of the One-tree Hill Domain It was conditionally agreed to again lease the Domain to'the Golf Club for the "term of one year, at an increased rent of £30 per annum., The conditions imposed were that the club should not play over certain portions, so . that hockey ' and other games might be played during the winter season. The club alsb undertook not to play on public holidays. . , /Applications were dealt, with from the Onehunga Cricket- Club and Kapuna Hockey Club, and it was decided to reply to the effect that the Board had approved of the games of golf, cricket, and hockey, being played on the Domain, and that the Works Committee was empowered to select sites for the, various games. -~ " - A letter, was then read from the Minister for Lands, with a copy ot the Gazette notice appointing Sir George Maurice O'ftorke and Mr. Chas. Bagley members of the One-tree Hill Domain Board. : " - BIRKENHEAD BURGESSES' ASSOCIATION'. A special meeting of the Birkenhead Burgesses' Association was held in the Foresters' ' Hall.', The president (Mr. E. : P. :'Tizard) occupied ' the " chair, and there was, a fair attendance of ratepayers. The secretary '■'reported ah addition of 30 new members, making a total of 70 i to date. , In, connection with the reclamation, the secretary (Mr. Newton) stated, on the authority of the town clerk, that the borough engineer had stopped the : work under the terms of the : contract. It was resolved that the town clerk be asked for a statement of the amount of money drawn under the reclamation loan, and of liabilities incurred. A recommendation was adopted, that the Mayor suggest to the engineer of the Auckland. Harbour Board that the work of the retaining wall might be made more permanent by the use of fascines, or other material sufficient to withstand the action of the tide. ' **Mr. Thompson, moved, and it was agreed, "That the Borough Council be asked for a copy of the agreement made with the Gas Company regarding the street mains in the borough." • ' In view of the fact that a portion of the old Queen-street Wharf had been closed for traffic, diverting it on to the new structure, several of the members considered -. that the centre of the new wharf should be used for the passengers to and from the ■ Northcote Ferry Tee, with a 4ft high railing on each side, as a protection from the vehicular traffic. The secretary and Mr. C. E. Camp--bell were- appointed to / confer with the Mayor respecting this matter. PONSONBY SHAKESPERE AND RHETORIC .";■ ; - ■ CLUB. \ The Leys Institute readers appeared- on Thursday night in Shakespere's "King .John." There was much excellent reading. Mr. E. T. Hart did well in the title role, whilst. Bastard lost nothing at the hands of Mr. Maxwell Walker. The character of Constance was allotted to Mrs. Forsyth, who made an excellent first impression. , Miss Bertha Jackson, who also ' made her : first appearance as , a reader, made a, winsome Blanche. Little Miss Olive Dean wag a surprisingly good Prince Arthur. The other characters in >a well-distributed cast were highly successful. . .. - ■v MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY. The Grafton Road Mutual Improvement Society met on Thursday evening, for a " Newspaper Evening." There was a large attendance. Among the many points raised were the questions of national defence, universal military . training, the municipal methods of 'Frisco, thermaL activity,, and the tone of the public press. A discussion took place on all'the questions raised, and with regard to the tone of the Auckland press, the general opinion was that it reached a very high level, and was a credit to the colony.' • ■ ■ * HU'NTLY ROD AND GUN . CLUB. ■ At a meeting of tn» committee of the Huntly Rod and Gun Olub, Capt. Elliot presided, The principal business was the distribution of the 2000 yearling rainbow trout granted by the Auckland Acclimatisation Society. After some discussion it was arranged to allocate them as follows:—Lake Hakanoa, 800; KimiLake, 300; Mr. J. H. Niccoll's lake, 600; Waahi Creek, 200 Creek, 200. It was resolved to make the usual application for fry, to accommodate, which fish .ponds to be erected in the creek connecting the ! Waikato and Lake Hakanoa, as well as in i the stream >' on Mr. C. ' Starr's property, '■ Messrs. P. H Exon, J. Hughes, and C. Richards to superintend the placing of the yearlings, and to obtain Mr. Spratt's advice respecting the, ponds. The. secretary (Mr. Richards) was instructed to thank the parent society for the generous supply of yearlings. It was" also' decided to organise a battue against shags next nesting season, and to ascertain whether ■ the Murray cod, which was reported to he an inveterate foe to eels, could :■■;be acclimatised. ■ " s ■ ■ COROMANDEL COUNTY, COUNCIL. At the monthly meeting of the Coromandel County Council. Mr. Swindley presided. /•;■;{.•■; C. McNeish . and other residents of Kuao-, tunu wrote requesting to be allowed to dig gum on Crown lands without paying . a license fee. 1 It was resolved that owing to the existing;, depression '-• licenses without fee be granted to the applicants for the cur: rent year. The Counties Association wrote intimating that a .-. conference would be held prior to the , session of Parliament to consider the Local Government Bill and other matters. 1 . The Hon. James McGowan is .to ibe' asked to represent the Coromandel County. v'. The Clutha County Council wrote respecting the excessive coat of > th» present system of valuation, ■ and asking for the cooperation of other counties with a view to getting - the law amended to enable valuations to be made by the local bodies concerned. -, '■'•■ ' • ■ '■ ..'•«.,- Mr. J. C. ;■' Fraser, a director of the ; Old Hauraki Gold Mining Company, waited on the Council regarding the charge of £40 per annum for water for the Hauraki mine, and urging that? concession be made, as the battery is idle. He also asked that concessions made to the projected new company for water generally. It was decided to defer consideration till next meeting. The schedule of grants to be asked for out of the allocations, during the. coming ses- ' sion was considered. There was a consensus of opinion that main trunk roads, such as from Coromandel.to Mercury Bay. Coromandel to Cabbage Bay,, Cabbage Bay to Cape Colville. and the Thames Road, should be ,placed first on the list.' -.* : ■ It was resolved that the' Minister for Lands be asked to acquire Whenuakite No. 2 Block (Kauri Timber Company)' for closer settlement.
