PROCEEDINGS AGAINST THE CROWN.
[BT TELEGRAPH.--PRESS ;. ASSOCIATION.] , ' -New Plymouth, Tuesday. A considerable sum lias been lost to the local bodies interested by the failure on the part of the Crown to keep Spotswood settlement occupied. ; Forfeited sections have not contributed to the local revenue, and Ministers recently promised that the law would be altered, in order that these sections, once leased, should pay local rates, whether afterwards*forfeited or not. The solicitor to the Taranaki County r Council now alleges that the Crown is - responsible for the payment of rates, and instructions have been issued to take proceedings for their recovery.
