REPATRIATION OF CHINESE.

One deputation, representing the Benevolent Trustees, asked : that part of the poll tax received should be applied to send indigent. Chinese back to China. ' It was explained that the • total cost of maintaining indigent ' Chinese was about £858 per annum, and that they could be sent back to China lor' about! £12 per head. The. Minister „gaid. application ■ should be made to the Charitable Aid •Boards, which" received - the 5 subsidies. He lfad, no hesitation in saying that the ' Government would not make any special contribution in l aid of the object asked.;
