The Agent-General for 'New South Wales in > London has forwarded to the St*t%Premier a copy ?of a communication addressed to him by Mr. W. S. Bruce, F.R.S.E., director of the Scottish Oceanftgraphical La-. boratory, Surgeons' Hall, Edinburgh, respecting the investigation of the force and direction of the currents -of the Southern Ocean. Mr. Bruce writes:—"During the last : few months' two bottle floats which were y thrown \ overboard from the Scotia, the vessel' of the .Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, have. been recovered on the coast ' of Victoria, - Australia, V after 'travelling a distance of from 9000 to 10,000 miles. : The floats were ordinary bottles , with a numbered paper inside, requesting the finder to return them to the British Admiralty, with whom* arrangements haws been * made for their receipt. The floats, were 1 thrown out for, the purpose of investigating : ithe cur-,, rents ; ; of j the; southern;; hemisphere,, and, -I: 'shall'be pleased: if you could give .lis any; assistance by I notifying ;in -y New South; Wales, the likelihood of' their being, swept ashore,; or being found floating in ; adjacent, and requesting the ' finders,* in the interests of oceanographical research, ,to return ; them to the British Admiralty,"
