Hooper leaves London to-day for Ireland, to take charge of the New Zealand exhibit at the Dublin Exhibition.; I hear that the colony is to be well repieeented in specimens of produce. It is officially announced that. Brevet-; Lieutenant-Colonel E. W. C. Chaytor, New Zealand Forces, is to be attached to the First Division, . Aldershot Army Corps, from the 27th inst. to May 18, under Staff j College regulations. According to a London paper, religious leaders in New Zealand have invited the Rev. R. J. Campbell, of the " New Theology" notoriety, to pay a visit to that coj lony, and that he has decided to do so, j so soon as opportunity will permit. ! , The birth of a daughter to the Governor I of New Zealand and Lady Plunket is just announced, the ■ " cradle column 'running as follows:- "On March 31, at Portobello House, Dublin, wife of Lord Plunket, Governor of New Zealand, of a daughter." Mr. H. L. Rawson (Wellington) has arrived in England. Allardyce, C.M.G., Go-, vernor of the Falkland Islands, and formerly holding an important official position in Fiji,, is about to arrive in England on' a short visit. Mrs. Allardyce will, accompany her husband.- It is three years since Mr. Allardyce went toi the Falkland Islands as Governor, after having served for 25 years in various capacities in Fiji. / Mr. Mark Cohen (Dunedin) arrived ..in London on Saturday last, having travelled in the s.s. It was in the final of the gentlemen's singles championship that Decugis met with his mishap. v The New Zcalander, : Mr. A. F. Wilding, played in.his usual form, but the Frenchman put up; a brill liaht.game, and won the, first set at 6—4. The "second went to Mr. Wilding at 6—l, but Decugis took the third at the same figures. In the fourth set, however, Decugis strained his back, and, with the. games 4 to. 1 against him he was compelled to retire. . . . , Mr. J. A. Gilruth has gone north to Scotland to note the progress made in his department of science by the leading Scottish laboratories. •It is mentioned that Mr. Gilruth is trying to arrange for reciprocity in diplomas between the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons of the United Kingdom, and the new Veterinary College which is being started in'Dunedin. He had an interview a few days ago with the president; of the R.C.V.S. , in connection with the matter. ; Mr.-.Gilruth has still many engagements before him for the remainder of his stay. in the United Kingdom, but he hopes to be able to take another run over to Paris and the Pasteur Institute before sailing for New Zealand in May or June. Last' week I mentioned that the New Zealand boxer. A. J.. Blewden, had not •been able to do justice to himself at the recent. English amateur boxing championship meeting, owing to an accident. To a press representative after the event, Blewden stated', that some three weeks before the fixture he was unfortunate enough to'strain the'sinews of both his feet, and it was not until ' a week before the contest that he began to prepare for the ring., He was then, B£lb above the lightweight standard. and it was only by the aid of Turkish baths that he could bring himself down to the requisite lOst This wasting process of course, left him, as he himself observed, "as-weak as a kitten." And, in addition, his injured feet had to •be laced ,up in elastic bandages before' he could enter the ring. It is understood that Blewden will leave on his return to Auckland at an early date. .' - In spite of the Easter holiday period, there have been a fairly large number of callers at the London office of the New Zealand Government during the past few days.
