THE GOLDFIELDS.

~ KIP.] KIR!. The mine manager, of the Kirikiri Gold Mining Company telegraphed to the secretary (Mr. J. Stevenson) on Saturday morning as follows :— Secured 401b of picked stone from winze. Gold left showing. -Reporting, under May 10, the manager says :—" The winze has been extended 10ft, making a total cf 27it. The reef is from 16in to 2ft thick. In breaking down 401b of picked stone was selected, and gold is left showing, in both ends and in the bottom. There ,is gold showing for the full distance, 27ft, in both ends. The general dirt is also very rich, as colours of gold have been seen right through it. The rise from the stopes has been extended 4ft; total 30ft. The reef is only 6in thick, and is carrying splendid minerals. This is now almost up the required distance. As soon as 1 get the timbers in I will start driving north. Stoptf No. 3, has been extended 6ft; total 40ft. The reef is 15in thick. In j breaking down a few colours of gold were seen. In the winze it appears to me as i though we were sinking through a big run of gold because gold is scattered right ! through the reef from wall to wall. If the water keeps as it is in the winze I will have to discontinue rise and stope, and put the men in it until' we get down, say 50ft or 60ft. Then we will open out." - WAIHI. The dividend and bonus of 3s each, declared at the annual meeting of shareholders of the Waihi Gold Mining Company, held in London on the 9th inst., will be payable on June 1. The distribution of the additional 6s per share, will bring the total amount disbursed in dividends and bonuses up to £2,577,896. NEW MAY QUEEN. [by telegraph.— CORRESPONDENT.] ' Thames, Saturday. In the early portion of the week a slide was intersected in the New May Queen mine, in the St, Hippo crosscut, at No. 5 level; .it' has every appearance, of being the main slide, as it is of large size, a distance of 18ft having been driven into it during the. week. As there is yet no sign of the footwall this slide may be taken as an indication that the St. Hippo reef is close at hand. In the upper levels the reef runs parallel with the slide, along the footwall, side, only a short distance from it, so that when tne footwall of the slide is reached the reef may be expected at any time. The slide formation where driven into is composed of rubbly quartz and pug, but as yet no gold has been ; seen in it, although the quartz looks promising, and contains a, good -class of mineral. The stoping operations on the No. 4 lode are being carried on as usual, both at No. 6 and No. 5 levels, and are producing the same steady supply of ore, through which a little gold is seen. The ore is being treated at the battery, 22 head of stampers being kept running for one shift per day. ' NEW: SAXON. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT ] Thames, Saturday. Considerable improvement has taken place in the quartz coming, to hand from the stopes on No. 2 reef, in the No. 4 level, at the New Saxon mine, dabs of gold being seen freely through it when breaking down. This is more especially the case in the quartz from the branch picked up running into the footwall, which also carries gold mineral and looks promising for further improvement as the work advances. This branch is running about parallel with the other portion, and at a distance from it of from two to three feet. It appears to get further away going upwards, so that it is probable that it has not been worked at the No. 3 level. The gas has been cleared out from No. 5 level of the mine, and the workings examined>with~ a • view- to commencing operations ! there, but as it was found that considerable repairs were first necessary it has been decided to defer this work for the present. . OLD ALBURNIA. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] , Thames, Saturday. No improvement has yet taken place in the quartz coming to hand from the reef being driven on in the Old Alburnia mine, at the main tunnel level. The drives eastward are being continued, both on the footwall and iiangingwall of the reef, and to thoroughly test the value of . the quartz trial parcels are put through the battery from time to time, but so far with poor results. It is, howevej-, hoped that the value \oi the reef will improve as it is driven on eastward, as it is in that direction that the rich gold was obtained in the upper levels. A recent survey made of the position of this reef, points to the fact that it is the Sons of Freedom reef. The point where it was intersected is about 600 ft westward of the Alburnia shaft. ' THAMES. [BY telegraph.—own correspondent.] Thames, Saturday. Somewhat slow progress has been made in the Thames mine with the extension of the main crosscut for the Nonpareil section during the past few weeks, in consequence of the very hard nature of the rbek existing in the face. The appearance of the face now, however, points to the fact that the hard bar is about passed through and better country is showing on one side of the face, and appears to be taking the place of the bar ahead, so that better progress may be expected in future. NEW MOANATAIARI. [BY telegraph.—own correspondent.] Thames, Saturday. Work in the winze on the Cambria below No. 4 level of the New Moanataiari has been suspended. The reef at the bottom of the winze was broken into for a few feet underneath the rib of dark quartz, and showed no sign of improvement, being of a hard, flinty nature. The total distance sunk in this winze is 55ft. The work now in hand is that of prospecting the hangingwall reef belov? the old Cambria No. 4 level, for the purpose of the development of the reef, and to determine its point of junction with the main reef downwards, where it is hoped payable ore may be met with. DREDGING RETURNS. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Dcnedix, Saturday. The following dredging returns are to hand:— Creek, 14oz 15dwt; Mystery Flat, 50oz 2dwt; Koputai, 38oz 7dwt; Waikaia. 330z 6dwt; Perseverance No. 1, 30oz; Perseverance No. 2, 20oz 12dwt; Kura, 17oz 6dwt; Charlton Creek, 15oz; Central Charlton, 12oz Bdwt; Hessey, 12oz 7dwt; Hartley and Riley, lloz; Clutha River, 60oz 3dwt; Punt, A'Sos 9dwt ; Rise and Shine No. 2, 470z 7dwt; Rise and Shine No. 1, 370z lOdwt; Enterprise, 320z 9dwt; Waikaka United No. 1, 290z 16dwt; Rising Sun, 290z ldvvt; Sandy Point,, 230z 7dwt 12gr; Waikaka United No. 2, 16oz 16dwt. MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. Sunbeam (May 8): Work the mine lias been confined principally to the timbering of No. 1 level, preparatory to stoping operations being commenced over the back of this level. The No. 2 level is now : n a total distance of 85ft west of the main crosscut. The. reef being operated on is 2ft wide and the" ore coining to hand is of a payable quality. The stamps have worked ?A hours and crushed 11 tons of ore, yielding 2107, of amalgam and 8001b of concentrates, of an average value of £28 7s 6d per ton. Amalgam on hand amounts to 4450z; concentrate;!. 7 .tons Bcwt. Permanent crushing operations will be resumed on Monday morning. with three shifts. New Maratoto (May '9): . During the week 44 tons of ore broken from the stopes. over the intermediate level have been sent to the battery.' The reef here looks a little better and as wo get higher I think it will Improve in value. In the battery 1C stamps have been crushing 41 hours, and 35 tons have been treated. An average sample taken from the lip of the bos gave a value of £1 49 M. ■ '• :
