PROBABLE PURCHASE BY JA-
PANESE COMPANY.

Sydney, May 11. According to advices from the Far East, a powerful Japanese steamship company, reported to be the Shosen. Kaisha, of Osaka, is negotiating for the purchase of the Sonoma, Sierra, and Ventura. From what can be gathered the Japanese company desires to secure the vessels for tho purpose of establishing another trans-Paci-fic line between San Francisco and tho Orient, which may be affiliated with the Western Pacific railroad.
Writing in March last, our San Francisco correspondent mentioned that it was then rumoured that a Japanese company was likely to purchase the steamers named.
