• Waihi, Saturday. . The first meeting-of : the new Borough .I h Council waa . held ..on Thursday night, . t tho Mayor (Mr. J. Gilmour) in the chair. • A declaration was read from Mr. R. B. Lambert, of Auckland, an- - nouncing tho purchase of gold worth £11,513,' and a ' letter from tho National Bank intimated that £1250 had been placed to the credit of tho district fund ac- f J count as gold duty from March 20 to 31. j; Mr. W. Craufurd Brown, of the National Bank, wroto stating that ho had received £2000, the third and final instalment of the loan of '.£6OOO to tho waterworks extension account.'; A deputation, headed by Mr. W. J. Gray, waited on the Council and asked that the borough bo brought undor the Firo Brigades District Bill with tho object - of obtaining a reduction on the present firo <. insuranco rates charged. It was pointed out that this course would also mean a.reduction to tho Council in the upkeep of tho \'j%™ firo brigade, as under tho Act tho Government and Fire Underwriters' Association would .contribute towards, the cost. The .V, matter was referred to tho Works and Finance Committee for inquiry and report. .'-;J Tho Secretary of tho Post and Telegraph ; Department acknowledged the Council's . lettor urging an addition to the present , ' post office, or in lieu a now and more commodious building, to meet tho growing requirements of tho district, and promised to give the matter immediate attention. The .V:j Financc Committee's report showoi gold duty outstanding at £1346. The engineer drew attention to the fact that the prepare- v< tion of a report on the sewerage question would tako considerable time, and he waa ■ authorised to enter upon the work at once. Tho abattoir return gave the number- of. stock slaughtered for the month as follows: Cattle, 127; calves, 6; sheep and lambs, 655: pigs, 35. Tlie Waihi Orchestral Society lias mado great strides sinco Mr. W. McKinnou • accepted tho conductorship. The society now boasts 23 performing members, and they aic practising some ambitious works for their next public appearance. Mr. Crean, violinist, has quite recently been appointed .honorary loader. . The annual general meeting of raoiuhcni of the Waihi Licdcrtafel was held on Thursday and was well attended. Officers for. th« ensuing year were elected as under: — .VPatron, Mr. W. 11. Herries, M.H.R.; president, Mr. H. P. Barry; vice-presidents, ( Rev. Father Brodio and Messrs. H. L. Sim.monds and W. Craufurd Brown; committee of management, Messrs. G. Ulrich, F. Bcxhall, R. S. Ready, H. Macky; conduct tor, Mr. W. McKinnon; deputy-conductor, '• Mr. Hookey; librarian, Mr. G. Taylor; treasurer, Mr. E. Morgan; secretary, Mr. A. Lakeman; pianists, Mrs. Buddi Miss Morgan, Messrs. Hookey and Craufurd Blown. The society has already enrolled a considerable number of honorary * sub- -- '"j scribers, and three concerts are to be pro- ■ vided during the season. ■ The monthly meeting of the Waihi Unit- '. .< ed Friendly Societies' Hospital Conference was held last night, Mr. P. Cooncy being . ' in the chair. The question of holding a . second hospital demonstration was discussed, and it was decided to make arrangements for holding the same some time in June. Tho resignation of the vice-president (Mr. J. W. Daley) was accented with regret. Tho balance-sheet in connection with, thedemonstration held in April was adopted, and, considering the unfavourable weather on the day of the function, the net proceeds: handed to Iho hospital authorities were considered satisfactory. A special vote of thanks Avas recorded to Mr. G. Ton go for his services as acting-aeeretary in connoctioa with the demonstration. •- -
