SURPLUS NATIVE LANDS.
OPENING OF THE COMMISSION., [by telegraph.—own correspondent.]
Kaitaia, Friday. The' Commission to inquire into j surplus native lands. and various native land claims was opened here. to-day by the Commissioner, Mr. Houston, M.H.R., Mr. Seon being interpreter. ; • ■ ~ Timoti Puhipuhi and others claimed 1000 acres lying between Kaitaia and Pukepoto. Timoti* stated that the land was sold by his father to the late Rev. Joseph Matthews, who subsequently returned it. Government ownership was first heard of when a royalty from gumdiggers was claimed. Others gave evidence. Mr. Houston visited the land this afternoon. .Among other claims is one for the island that North Cape lighthouse stands on. .
