FREEDOM OF MANCHESTER CITY.
CONFERRED ON PREMIERS. London, May 9. The Lord-Mayor of Manchester (Mr. Harrup) presented Mr. Deakin, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, and Dr. Jameson with the freedom of. the city at the Hotel Cecil yesterday. In his speech he said the granting of the freedom of the city was a personal tribute and also a mark of affectionate Regard ■ and brotherly feeling for the colonies, with whom they wished to foster the common sentiment .. of Empire. Mr. Deakin acknowledged the honour, and said he regretted his inability to visit Manchester, where he would have been brought into close touch with most interesting developments of local government, and would also have become acquainted with a great industrial community. , Dr. Jameson said he would like to see Manchester, which enjoyed a practical monopoly of the cotton trade of South Africa.
