Cahruthers proposes to reduce the members of the Assembly from 90 to , 60, not 50. He expects, at the end of the year a surplus of £1,350,000, which is to be devoted to public works hitherto carried out from loans. Other proposals are The placing .the administration!; of the Lands Department under a Board, consisting of members of known ability and probity. He intends to set aside £33,000, to provide pensions to invalids arid cripples, and to subsidise the friendly societies to the extent of £24,000. The resumption, of -the Peel River Estate, of 250,000 acres, for closer settlement, is to be effected, and there is to be an examination of all lands within 20 miles of the railways in the rainfall belt, with a view to resumption. There is to be" an extension of ■ the Public Health Act for the making of consumption and other diseases notifiable. '.''..' , . Melbourne, May 10.
