SHIPPING DISASTER.
EMIGRANT SHIP ASHORE. A PANIC ON BOARD, THE WORK OF RESCUE. By Telegraph.Press Association.— (Received May 9, 10.59 p.m.) London, May 9. The French steamer Poitou, bound from Marseilles . for Buenos Ayres, with Spanish emigrants, has been wrecked on Cape San Martin, on the Spanish coast. She went ashore during a gale. The moment the vessel struck the passengers became panic-stricken, and a number of them sprang overboard with the intention of swimming' ashore. Of these fifteen were drowned. Rescue operations were at once undertaken from the shore, and by means of the ship's boats, and so for 200 of the passengers have been saved. ■':..'■- ' < At the time of the disaster there were nearly 100 women below, with hatches battened down. The work of rescue is proceeding. The Poitou is a steamer of 2626 tons register, and of the following principal dimensions: Length, 326 ft; breadth, 36ft llin.; depth, 25ft 7in.
