FATAL ACCIDENT AT CHEISTCHURCH.

Mtedical aid Was asked for, and the ambulance was at once sent out, * '• with a doctor. It was found that the accident had occurred a few hundred yards be- ' ' yond the Halswell Hotel. Mr. Henry Amelius Ferguson was driv:ing home in a four-wheeled express, accompanied by a groom '(Edgwin), when ; the ;..':'; V Vehicle collided with a traction, engine 'standing about a yard from the side of the road. The horse swerved, and Mr. Fer- . ' guson, who was driving, was thrown out ; of the express, his head striking the trac- ■ ' tion engine. The groom was only shaken slightly, and the horse was unhurt^ Mr. Ferguson was attended to by Dr. Syms, and. While being conveyed to the Christenurch Hospital he expired. The !i' body was removed to the morgue. The night was very dark and foggy. i The inquest was opened this evening. ' Evidence was given that the traction engine ! ' was drawn up close to the fence and out of j ;;yiv the path of traffic, and lights were shown both fore and aft. The deceased and his groom visited the Halswell Hotel shortly '■' before the accident, but the licensee refused to serve them, for the reason that they were i': under the influence of liquor. The inquest ' was adjourned so that the evidence of the t ' ; groom might be procured.
