At the meeting of the Mount Roskill Road Board last evening the chairman (Mr. Chas. '<■. Bagley) referred to the continued prosperity and development of the district. The roads also were in good condition, the finances flourishing, many improvements about to be effected, : and the ratepayers satisfied. It was the intention of the Board,, a* in the past, to have no committee or " back parlour" business, but to allow all proceedings to be.open to the press. Dealing with the rates, he mentioned that the general rate was the lowest in the province, amounting'as it did to £d in the £, which also covered hospital and charitable aid levy. The rate of fd in the £ for waterworks construction purposes was low, yet in all probability only half of it would be required. ~. At the next meeting he expected to-be in a position: to announce a matter of great importance to the development of the district, and which at the same time would not encroach upon the finances of the Board. ; A young woman was admitted to the, district hospital late last evening, suffering from carbolic poisoning, supposed to have been self-administered. She is likely to recover. The police are in charge of the case. Letters have been received by the town clerk (Mr. H. W. Wilson) from several of the unsuccessful Australian architects, with reference to the designs which' they forwarded for the new Town Hall.' In many instances the competitors express their confidence that the competition was carried out fairly to all parties concerned, and that the City Council will have every reason to be satisfied with the selection made. , More people die from the indirect . results of colds than anything else.
