A "BOY-GIRL MARRIAGE."

HUSBAND AND MOTHER-IN-LAW.

The troubles of a young married couple were told to Mr. C. C. Kettle, S.M., at the Police Court yesterday, when Mrs. A. C. Nicholson applied for a separation order fiom her husband, Alexander E. Nicholson. Mr. Brookfield appeared for the complainant, but defendant - was not represented by counsel.

Complainant, who appeared in Court suffering from a black eye, said that she was only 18 years of age and her husband 21. Defendant had very often illtreated her. Only lecently he blackened her eye, and struck her on the arm with the hairbrush. They had had one child, but it, died "some time ago.

Defendant, a tram conductor, said " the trouble, in a nutshell, was his mother-in-law," who had always interfered with him. He also said that bis wife, would not cook his meals for him. " I have even had to wash and iron my shirts and scrub the floor," said defendant. "I will give my wife another chance if my mother-in-law will keep away from us." Nicholson admitted striking his wife on the arm with the hairbrush, but said he did so because his mother-in-law interfered with him. Hie complainant's mother denied interfering with defendant, and said she had assisted him in many ways. j .Mr. Kettle described the case as " a boy-girl marriage in haste," and said that defendant had treated his wife in a brutal and cowardly manner. However, he was sorry for both parties, and would adjourn the case for a fortnight, to see whether some arrangement might be arrived at in the meantime.

MAINTENANCE CASES. Robert Drummord was sentenced to one month's imprisonment for disobeying an order of the Court for the maintenance of his wife, the warrant to be suspended for 14 days in order to allow defendant to pay 50s arrears. ' George H. Cain was ordered to contribute 12s pe- week towards the support of his mother. ■ Agnes L. and Ada F. Johnson were charged on the information of their mother (Mary A. Johnson) with failing to maintain her. Mr. F. Harvey appeared for the complainant, and Mr. Brookfield for lie defendants. The girls offered to contribute Is each per week towards their mother's support, but this was declined. After hearing the/ evidence, His Worship adjourned the case until the 30th hist., in order to give the girls an opportunity of making sonic arrangement with their mother.

On the application of his wife, a separation order was. issued against John Graham. Mrs. Graham was given the legal custody of the children, and defendant, was ordered to contribute 15s per week towards their maintenance. Mr. J, R. Lundon appeared for complainant.

CHARGES OF THEFT. Frank Charles Smith, on a charge of stealing a rjig, valued at 18s, belonging to William Whittingham, of the schooner Greyhound, was further remanded.

John Lewis, alias O'Connor, a young man, was charged with stealing a diamond ring, valued at £65, the property of Myer Goldwater. On the application of ChiefDetective Marsack, the accused was remanded for eight days. MISCELLANEOUS.

A young ' man, James Kitt, pleaded guilty to charges of drunkenness, resisting the police, and refusing to quit the Albert Hotel when requested to do so. He was lined £1 and costs on the first charge, and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon on the other charges. A prohibited man, named Nicholas Heath, was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment for drunkenness and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon on acharge of breaking the prohibition order. Robert 11. Bat ■man, a second offender, was fined £1 and costs, or in default seven days" imprisonment for drunkenness. A coloured man, mimed Joseph Gomez, was charged with having committed a criminal assault on a 17-year-old boy. After the evidence of the prosecution, the accused said he must have been drunk if he hud committed any offence. The charge was reduced to one of common assault, and then dealt with summarily, Gomez being sentenced to one. month's imprisonment with hard labour.
