HOCKEY.

The Auckland Hockey Club will hold their annual meeting at the Auckland Sports Club next Friday evening at eight p.m. An Auckland rep. team will probably visit Clisbortie and Napier early this season, as visits to Auckland are expected from some of the .Southern associations later on. Otago are making great efforts to send a rep. team through New Zealand, and it. is hoped their endeavours will meet with success.

Owing to the good sportsmanship of the Auckland Hockey Club the senior teams will this year again have the handsome Davis cup to compete for. It. will be remembered that by winning the senior championship last, year the Auckland Club won the cup outright, but immediately presented it- to the association again for competition. I hear that strong efforts are being made to start, clubs at North Shore and Ponsonby. It is to l>e hoped the two large suburbs will be able to place teams in the field.

The United Club. I hear, wiil be strengthened this year by the inclusion of Sherritfs, Brown, and .Morpeth. It would he pleasing to see this old club, who were the first winners of the championship, again come out on too.

'111 Referees Association this year have even a stronger membership than' last .season. This is good news to all hockev players. The University Club have a strong membership this year, and intend to place three teams in the field.

he association have again secured grounds on the polo field, Remuera, and will also probably have a ground or two on the Domain.

The prospects for the game during the coining season seem particularly encouraging. According to pre-out talk every club in the competition last, season will'again be out to contest the honours. In addition it-is expected several new clubs will form. Other district* contemplating the- formation of clubs are Eden, Eprom, and Oiiehunga • but I understand that each district finds a difficulty in securing grounds. The Auckland Association should set the ball rolling early this season. It is quite possible that Ota go may send up a representative team, and inquiries have a I read v been made from the Old Boys' team of I almerston North as to the playing of two matches hero. In view of the tact, that the Southern loams start plaving fnllv a month ahead of the Auek'and tarns.' an early start is necessary if the local phiveis do not- wish to he at a disadvantage. ' lie Referees Association hold their annual meeting next Wednesday evening at half-past five in .Mr. Wright's office. Victoria Chambei-i. Fort-street. The officers of this useful body desire the attendance of all members and also oibers who have a th-ire to assist in the conduct of the games during the season. Old players are specially invited. The first hookey match of the season at Fvaran gal lake took ph.. on Wednesday last in Cornes' paddock, between the Suburbs and West clubs. Tile result was a win for West by five '.'onl- to nil. Goals were scored by Hillings (1). Simeon, (1). Chapel (1). .Douglas (/-.). Some of the new beginners showed good form.
