DISTRICT SCHOLARSHIP REGULATIONS.

AMENDMENTS SUGGESTED BY EDUCATION BOARD.

At the meeting of the Auckland Board of Education yesterday, a number of suggested amendments to the regulations for the establishment of district scholarships were submitted by the secretary (Mr. V. E. Rico). The regulations provided that the number of junior scholarships should be double the number of senior, and it was proposed to strike out this clause. The provision that the value of a junior scholarship should be £10 a year, with an extra £25 if the holder required to board away from home, had been struct out, and the junior scholarships placed on the level of the senior, viz., £10 a year, with £30 board allowance per annum, where tlie holder required to board away from home. Clause 8 provides that the examination for junior district scholarships shall be that for junior national scholarships and free places, and the lust line of this:—"All candidates entered for the said examination shall be deemed to be candidates for junior district scholarships," was struck out. In the clause relating to compulsory subjects, the line " The subject matter of Euclid books 1., 11., and 111., with easy deductions," was struck out, and instead were inserted lie words, "as prescribed for the matriculation examination of the University, with easy deductions." In optional subjects, the order of (a) botany, (b) physiology, (c) chemistry, (d) mechanics, and (e) physics, was changed to any two of the following:—(a) Elementary mechanics, (b) chemistry, (c) botany, (d) physiology, and (e) physical measurements, the programme of examination in each of these subjects being that prescribed for the Civil Service junior examination. It was decided by the Board to approve the suggestions, and forward them to the Minister for Education for his consideration.
