THE GOLDFIELDS.

WAIHI.

RETURN FOR MARCH.

£63,090 FROM 27,072 TONS

TOTAL TO DATE, £5,538,490.

Di'ium; the month of March the Wain; Gold Mining Company crushed and treated 27,072 tons of ore for a yeild of bullion valued at £65,090, these figures being in excess of the return for the corresponding month of 1996, when bullion to the value of £60,210 was obtained from 25.281 tons of ore. This return is the third highest secured from the mine for a monthly period, only being beaten by the record return of last month, with a yield of bullion valued at £63,235, and just barely by that of April of last year, when the value of bullion amounted to £63,102. I'iie grand total to date reaches the sum of £5,538,490, but though the 1306 return is put down at £786,474, the adjustment of bullion values will increase that sum to about £825,000. ' The dividend, which will be declared by the directors this morning, is expected to be the usual Is 3d per share. WAT HI GRAND JUNCTION. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN COnRESI'O.\DKNT.] Waihi, Thursday. There seems to be every indication that the No. 4 level in the Waihi Grand Junction mine is going to prove very productive. The lode is much stronger than it was at corresponding points in the levels, overhead. This is particularly noticeable in the eastern face on the No. 1 or Martha lode, the distance driven being about 80ft from the crosscut. In the opposite direction the drift has been carried along for about ICOft, and in both faces the ore contents include an increased percentage of mineral. The No. 2 lode has been drifted in a north-easterly course for about 110 ft from the crosscut", but it. is not expected to get under the payable chute for another 70ft or 80ft. The new electric winding engine has been at work for about 10 days, and is running very smoothly. The vacuum filter press plant has been set to work, and is giving great satisfaction. The concentrators have now been working about a month with successful results," and a commencement is to be made again with the tube mills. An alteration will be made with the mesh in the stamper plant, a larger mesh being substituted for the ore now in use. The " de-v atering" plant, for taking the water out of the slimes preparatory to cyaniding, will be completed within a fortnight. WAIHI EXTENDED. [BY TELEGRAPH, —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Waihi, Thursday. The exploitation work at No. 4 level of the Waihi Extended mine is being carried on expeditiously. In the south-west crosscut, the face of which has been extended about 70ft from the chamber, a large number of stony quartz veins have, made their appearance, interlacing the country to such an extent that it is believed that the lode is very close at hand. These veins, as well as the country, are heavily impregnated with a most, favourable class of mineral. The winze sunk from No. 3 level has been completed to within a few feet . of the hack of No. 4 level, and the deeper the work attained the better the lode became. The dimensions of the reef are not ascertainable, as only the width of stone opened in the winze was exposed by the working, but there is no doubt that a large body of stone exists. NEW ZEALAND GOLD RETURNS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION'.] Wellington", Thursday. During last month New Zealand exported 50,5730z of gold, valued at £203.673, as compared with 35.2810z, valued at £143.338, in March of last year. Since the beginning of the present year the export of gold has been 118.1190z. of the value of £473,472, or 11,7700z less than in the first quarter of 1906. .MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. New Dart (March 30): Rep, to (lie shaft have .been ill progress, and it is being made bin wider arid aboiu 3itt larger to correspond with the shaft Blink below No 2 level. New Moanataiari (March 301: The hand of dark mineralised stone hi the old No. 4 level if being followed onward' on the western side to determine its dimensions. It is from 6in to lib in thickness ami contains bright mineral, as well as carrying gold. The result of the recent trial crushing proves that the ore is of fair quality. May Queen Extended (April 2): In the Rocky Point. face (west) we have driven 71ft, and have .■trial; first-class country, the reef showing a few colours of gold at each breaking down and improving in value hs worked upon. It looks promising enough to produce, picked stone at any breaking down. In the rise we are obtaining good crushing quartz, allowing strong dabs of gold. .Knpowai (April 1): the low level has '■ -.n extended 18ft; total distance, 123 ft. The country continues to be of <i good description. A second f.tnpe lias been started on the leader in the western end of No. 2 level, but the leader has pinched in to 2iu and prospect* poorly. Rising will lie started to see if the ground improves. In the eastern end of No. 2 level the reef if disturbed in the face by a slide. Magnet (April 2): Better progress has been made in the main crosscut. Silica seams came to hand every- few feet, and in some cases quartz is mixed with the silica, and we should be close on to the reef country. . New Monowsi (March 28): So far the quart*/ carted to the battery is 56 tons from No. '. level and 17 tons from the Broken Hills section, each lot being kept separate for treatment. Tin renovation of the battery is in progress.
